The original plan for this gig was that Bob Wayne and his boys would start the show at 20:00, followed by Tex Perkins and The Fat Rubber Band. That's not really what happened though. Bob Wayne ran into some Staub an der Autobahn and would be arriving later than expected. Instead Tex Perkins and The Fat Rubber Band played first, starting at 20:30. This would once again be a very long night at the Loppen venue.
Tex Perkins and The Fat Rubber Band actually sounded okay, but they also got boring pretty quick. They played for what felt like a long time and let's be honest, I would have left after a few songs if they had played last.
I always see Bob Wayne when he is in Copenhagen. He is a great entertainer, not too cool to take the piss on himself and everybody else. The last few times I've seen Bob, he has played a solo act, Bob and his guitar. This time however, he'd brought his full country band with him. While Bob solo is entertaining, he is just better with a band. Sadly, there were no steel guitarist this time, and while it still worked okay, it was clearly a loss.
Bob has a new album on his way, in fact it has been on it's way for several years now, and he played several songs from the upcoming album. The new and newer songs sounded very promising and most of them had a thing or two to do with Trucking. The titles were: "My Cowboy Hat Ain't Clean", "Space Trucker", "Trucking For Jesus", "Truckaholic". The merch girl told me, that Bob would soon be launching a European website and the new album and some new t-shirts would be available there. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
The song "Rollin' With The Flow" was a cover of an old Charlie Rich tune. The rest of the setlist was made up of oldies but goodies from the Bob Wayne catalogue. He also took several requests from the audience. Requests included: "Hanging Tree", "20 Miles To Juarez" (requested by yours truly), "La Diabla". Like always, the show ended with the classic Bob Wayne outro song "Spread My Ashes On The Highway".
It was a hot evening in Copenhagen and it got as late as it always does at Loppen, nothing new there. Bob Wayne & The Outlaw Carnies did what we expected them to do. They truck n rolled, Bob was entertaining as always and we got new songs as well as requests. What's not to like? See you next time, Bob.
