I first caught Sodakill live about a year ago at Råhuset, Copenhagen. They played a fantastic gig and they really impressed me. They owned the stage. I picked up their LP at the merch stand and it has been one of my favorite spins for the last year. They have since released a few digital bonus tracks and a digital EP and all of it is up to the same high standard. It sounds great and it fucking rocks. I can listen to it on repeat for days and days.
I had to travel a bit further this time from Copenhagen to catch my second Sodakill live experience. They were booked for an event in Odense called Fundament #7. If I understood the staff correctly these events are a chance for younger and upcoming bands to get some stage time. For this Fundament event they had booked 3 bands: Tangerine Power, Green Tea Bitches and Sodakill. The 2 other bands were great too. Tangerine Power is a local funk/soul band and they clearly had some local fans in the crowd. Green Tea Bitches is a really fun and entertaining Chinese/Danish duo performing some weird sort of happy electro punk.
It wasn't the biggest crowd this evening, but the rainy and very wet weather probably didn't help. Those who decided to be there had a great time and I can only recommend these Fundament events. The bookers clearly know how to spot some great and entertaining bands.
Musikhuset Posten has 2 stages. Tonight's stage was the smaller of the 2. The venue logistics are great and the staff are very friendly. Most importantly the place has great sound. I wouldn't mind going back there some other time for some great music, Odense pilsner and a few Lemmy drinks. Posten is located right next to Odense Station, so it is very easy to get to by train.
Sodakill label themselves as a Spicecore band out of Stockholm, Sweden. I guess "Spicecore" can mean anything really, but what I hear sounds like hardcore, punk, rock and metal elements all mixed together as a very catchy and approachable sound.
The band consists of four girls - featuring Julia on vocals and guitar, Beatrice on lead guitar, Elsa on bass and Astrid on drums. The singer has a powerful voice and often screams out the words. The lead guitarist knows her rock stuff really well. Since I saw them last time one bandmember had left the band. Their new bass player, Elsa, did a great job as replacement for the former bassist, My, providing the foundation and rhythm together with the drummer.
Sodakill didn't disappoint. They are all very entertaining and energetic on stage and the pace and tempo is fast and to the point. They joke a lot between the songs and never take themselves too seriously. They ran through most of their recently released output and some of their older songs too. The setlist below is the official setlist from the stage, but I believe they changed a few things and added more songs. A Sodakill setlist is only correct until it isn't. I love that.
I hear "some people" complain that there aren't enough female musicians on various stages. Well, here's one top quality live band for you, so why the fuck don't you book them more often then? I had a very nice chat with the girls before the gig (KP snakka Svenska), and they said they'd love to come back and play Copenhagen again, so bookers wake up and do your job! After the gig they kindly signed an LP for me.
See you next time, Sodakill!
