This roadmovie across the US and A based on Borat Sagdiyev (Sacha Baron Cohen aka Ali G) from Kazakhstan has been hyped to the extreme. After seeing it in a cinema last night I must say that it didn't quite live up to all that hype. The problem is that Borat works best in smaller portions. After a while it gets rather boring and you start to wonder when it will be over and when you can go home.
Admitted, several scenes are hillareous, ugly, funny and all that. And besides just laughing one of the fun things to do when watching the movie is to try and guess what is hidden-camera with "innocent" victims and what is rehearsed and agreed beforehand. It is not such an easy thing to determine.
The movie even gets VERY ugly in a hotel room when a naked Borat and his fat travel-mate (also naked) has a bit of a fight. I am very happy that I didn't have to participate in that scene.
If you compare it to the lousy Ali G movie "Indahouse" then Borat is a way better movie. But I still prefer Borat in smaller clips and all in all I was a bit disappointed. But I guess it will be able to provoke quite a few people and that is almost always a good thing! Americans are indeed very easy to make fun of.
